ORNAMENTAL AQUATIC PRODUCT FARMING

The world market of the marine keeping tropical fish represented more than 300 million dollars in 2005, according to the report of the national Centre of Surveillance of the Conservation of Programs of United Nations for the Environment. More than 20 million tropical fishes and some 1470 species would be captured every year to supply the more and more important tropical marine market.

In this figure have to be added 9 to 10 million of other marine organisms among which molluscs, shrimps, anemones, that is some 500 species, as well as 12 million corals which are sold to decorate private tanks or public aquariums.

Contrary to the water fish where almost 90 % of the species are raised in farm, the great majority of marine ornamental fishes result from takings in the natural environment. We know today that the future of the tropical marine fish keeping is in the development of new techniques allowing producing fishes in captivity in order to have the least impact on the wildlife.

The breeding of larvae taken from reef, the acclimatization and the swelling of these fishes, the reproduction and the breeding of different species, the cuttings and breeding of corals, etc., represent then another crenel for the promoters, with the market and demand evolution.
